Plan ahead – Harewood Bridge closure for repair works from Wednesday 26 July to Thursday 24 August 2023
From Wednesday 26 July to Thursday 24 August, Harewood Bridge will close for four weeks to traffic in both directions, to allow for waterproofing, resurfacing and foot path repairs to be carried out. The footway across the bridge will remain open. The bridge is a grade II listed structure which carries the Harrogate Road A61 over the River Wharfe.
The advanced notice is being given to help local residents and businesses to allow for any plans to help mitigate the closures.
To minimise disruptions, the road closures and works are planned to coincide with the reduced levels of traffic over the school holidays and a fully signed road diversion plan will be in place.
You may be aware that temporary repairs were made to extend the longevity of the carriageway, however these repairs can no longer continue without fixing the underlying problem.
The replacement waterproofing will lead to benefits such as:
- an increased reliability of journeys and reduction in congestion caused by unplanned emergency closures for carriageway repairs
- reduced risk of accidents caused by potholes in carriageway
- reduced risk of damage to vehicles caused by potholes in carriageway.
We are working with North Yorkshire Council and construction partner Balfour Beatty on traffic management for advanced road warnings ahead of the works. We are hoping to keep the duration of the bridge closure to a minimum and reopen to traffic on 24 August.
Local access will still be maintained for people walking, wheeling, and cycling to use the bridge.
Please find details of the diversion plan attached and available on www.leeds.gov.uk/HarewoodBridge website. The council will be carrying out further communications to make road users aware of the closures.
